From Sarat Mason & Kate Rowell (Librarians) at Ysgol John Bright, Llandudno: In association with the English dept and Cineworld Llandudno Junction (gave us free cinema tickets for the new film of ‘a Christmas Carol’ as prizes) we asked the students to write a letter to Scrooge to persuade him that Christmas was fab! One of the English teachers had the idea of using ‘a Christmas Carol’ in class with Y7 and 8 and asked if we wanted to do something in the Library to go with this. He contacted Cineworld, we did the posters and display, and organised the competition. We got some ‘easy reading’ versions of ‘A Christmas Carol’ from our local Schools Library Service. It was hugely successful and created quite a buzz in the Library. The hardest part was judging over 100 fantastic entries and not upsetting the English teachers whose students didn’t win!

Are You In The Mood To Read? This is a display outside the library. I went into classes and asked them to recommend books for people to read depending on their mood with a reason for choosing it. The results were displayed in the corridor to enable those who don’t visit the library to see it. Thanks to Helen Robinson, LRC Manager of Caldew School, Dalston, Cumbria

Film Club: Although not to do with books, this display is in the library as a Film Club runs in the library every week after school. The club also meet to discuss and review movies and I try to show movies of popular books often so that I can recommend they read the book and discuss the differences with those that have already read it. Halloween display at James Young High School, West Lothian. Kateri Wilson-Whalley, librarian, writes: 'The 'I read dead people' display shows the work of authors who are sadly no longer with us. Skeletons (these came from Tesco about £1.50 each) can be made to hold enlarged copies of the book covers. If you attach the books with bluetac then the books can be changed or the skeletons re-used in a different display later.'

Kateri adds 'Try to get the pupils involved in displays - I always find that though they may not be the fastest displays they are the most fun.'

Christmas wishes display at James Young High School, West Lothian. Kateri Wilson-Whalley, Librarian, writes: 'For this display I have a tree (budget from Asda with budget decorations) and wrapped some boxes up as 'presents' to give a bit of height variety. I then got pupils to help me create a letter to Santa which could be books they'd like. I've also done a Christmas display where staff and pupils were given a paper shape and asked to write their Christmas book wish on it and these were hung from the tree.'

Armistice Day display at James Young High School, West Lothian. Kateri Wilson-Whalley, librarian, writes: 'poppies made from paper and a single white cross made from paper. Table cloth used for the background and to cover the top of the table; poppies along with blown-up copies of photos of soldiers from the wars.''

From Gemma Jones, the LRC Co-ordinator at St Joseph's School in Workington, Cumbria. Some of these were designed to fit in with the monthly themes for the 2008 National Year of reading.

Ginette Doyle, Librarian, at Cheltenham College writes: We did this for World Book Day this year, based on Archimboldo’s painting. We asked pupils to identify the artist and the painting with a £10 book token as a prize.

Ginette Doyle, Librarian, at Cheltenham College writes: The National Parks and table displays are representative of what we have done for specific subjects and also for an evening event, with mulled wine and mince pies for teaching staff to see what has been purchased over the previous year. These are not my specific handiwork, but put on by the Library staff generally.

The latest display at Walsall College LRC shows a selection of art books and a display of paintings including the original image and a ‘reimagining’ by the artist Banksy (see next photo for close-up).

A Black History Month event in the library of Brittons School & Technology College, Rainham: 'We invited in a local arts group who make costumes for the Notting Hill carnival to show the students their work. We also had displays of books, information and websites on black history, art and culture.' Thanks to Heather Handley

The ‘Design a bookmark competition for World Book Day 2009 at Brittons School & Technology College. This was in conjunction with a Book fair held in the Library and the winners were able to choose a book from the fair as their prize (provided by Scholastic Book fairs). In Library lessons we allowed students to browse the Book fair and to create their bookmarks. They enjoyed seeing other students’ ideas and their own work on display. Thanks to Heather Handley

Bury Grammar School Boys: Ann Montgomery writes: We have to use all the available spaces around our entrance as most of our walls are windows. This is a very narrow noticeboard which I use for a quick-changing display to advertise what is going on in school and in the wider book world. I am using cloud shapes (from MS Word Autoshapes) at the moment as the background is blue but any outline shapes (eg stars, balloons, flowers, bubbles, bookmarks) could be used to ring the changes.

Corby Business Academy: Amy McKay writes 'The chav board was done to promote Grace Dent's Shiraz Bailey Wood series, it was hugely controversial and caused lots of arguments when students disagreed with the results. Most importantly though, it was noticed and lots of students were then persuaded to try the books. The quiz results all suggested reading the books for various reasons (i.e.. you need to know more about chavs and you're such a chav you need to check the representation is accurate etc).

Corby Business Academy: Amy McKay writes 'The multilingual board displayed an introduction to the Library and a copy of our rules in 6 different languages, the translation took a lot of time but our EAL students really appreciated this level of inclusion. I displayed a selection of our foreign language books in front.'

Corby Business Academy: Amy McKay writes 'The shoes board centred around Atticus Finch's comment about not knowing somebody until you've walked in their shoes, I chose different shoes for different types of autobiography. I also used shoes rather than book stands to display the books, but don't suggest using pairs - my favourite heels disappeared!'

Valerie Dewhurst created this display at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Blackburn: 'This is a very big display just outside the library main entrance. It's a turning point for everyone that enters the library as it's full of photos of past events that we have taken part in or organised. I feel it's a brilliant way of promoting the library and it's been very popular recently with pupils, staff and guests stopping to look. Of course the pupils love to spot themselves in the photographs. I aim to update this often so it will be an ongoing display - it's certainly made a difference to the entrance and brightened up what was a very dull corridor.'

Valerie Dewhurst's display at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Blackburn: 'The Christmas tree is a very simple but brilliant way of getting pupils to recommend books. Instead of decorating our tree the traditional way, this year I made it a 'Reading' Christmas tree and all pupils (and staff) could recommend their favourite read for 2008. All the pupils had to do was to write down their best book on a gift tag and the tags were hung on the tree. It looked brilliant once it was full, a real eye catcher and conversation stopper. I aim for a bigger tree for next year as we had so many tags - simple to do, easy to organise with a brilliant outcome.'
