Introduction to the Shorter Shakespeare series
The Shorter Shakespeare series is the indispensable introduction to the greatest literature in the English language. The scripts are shortened and illustrated versions in the original language with links by modern narrators. They are ideal for both performance and study. A review on www.schoolsnet.com commented: 'Five Star Rating: A fantastic resource... A real gem... Indispensable!'
So why do we need shortened versions?
All young people should be able to enjoy the very essence of a Shakespeare play but too often difficulties of language, sub plot and sheer length can be barriers. Most students need an introduction to Shakespeare that will engage them in the story, interest them in the characters and introduce them to the language.
Too many people look back on their introduction to Shakespeare at school as a rather unhappy experience. So the idea of this series is to awaken an early enthusiasm for the plays. Our shortened versions make the texts manageable and accessible for everyone.
As Peter Hollindale in The School Librarian said our series 'makes Shakespeare inviting to teenagers across the ability range.'
Performance The scripts are ideal for performance, running at about 50 minutes.
